Frequently Asked Questions

Why Use Beef Tallow?

Your skin deserves ingredients that work with it, not against it.
Beef tallow has been used for generations because it’s naturally rich in skin-loving fatty acids and vitamins that help moisturize and support the skin’s natural barrier. The composition of beef tallow is remarkably similar to our skin’s own oils, making it a beautiful, nourishing ingredient for many skin types.

What is tallow, and why put it on my skin? Grass-fed tallow is rendered beef fat, and its fatty acid profile closely mirrors the lipids your skin already produces. Because it's bio-compatible rather than purely plant-based, it tends to absorb and support the skin barrier differently than seed oils — while carrying fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K.

Will tallow skincare clog my pores? Grass-fed tallow is non-comedogenic — it mimics your skin's natural sebum rather than sitting on top of it and clogging your pore. That said, everyone's skin is different; we recommend consulting your doctor where necessary and a patch test before full use.

Does it smell like beef fat? No! We love the benefits of tallow, but we don't want you to smell like a freshly cooked french fry, unless that's your thing. Our formulas are rendered and purified before we blend in organic botanicals and essential oils, so each product carries its own scent profile (or none at all, e.g. Sensitive Skin Butter is fragrance-free).

Is this vegan? No. Tallow is an animal-derived ingredient, so our products aren't vegan.

Not all tallow is created equal.

At Char & Kol, we choose 100% grassfed and grass-finished tallow sourced from local farms because quality starts at the source. Pasture-raised cattle produce tallow that is naturally richer in beneficial nutrients, and supporting local farmers means we know exactly where our ingredients come from.

What about the other ingredients?

We carefully select organic oils and botanicals to infuse into our tallow to add skin care benefits. We never use ingredients that will compromise our tallow or your skin.  Whenever possible we use organic, single origin oils and botanicals because every ingredient in our formulas has a purpose. We don’t use fillers or unnecessary additives—just thoughtfully chosen ingredients that complement one another.

How long does a jar last, and how should I store it?

Store Char & Kol tallow products in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Hand-rendered pure tallow generally has a shelf life of 3 to 6 months at room temperature, 12+ months in the refrigerator, and up to 2 years in the freezer if stored in an airtight container away from light, heat, and moisture. If products are heated (above 80º) quickly, shelf life can change.

Do you mass produce? Can I order large or custom batches?

Every Char & Kol Tallow product is handcrafted in small batches with attention to detail. We believe taking the time to carefully render, formulate, and package each product. Our process and method's help us maintain the quality and consistency we’re proud to share with our customers. You can custom order with us, just use our contact form to reach out and we will gladly help craft a custom order that fits your needs.
